Just Like You #MCBD2019 #ReadYourWorld

Just Like You by Keosha Sath and Yasushi Matsuoka (Illustrator) is an encouraging new children’s book promoting gender equality through the loving way in which a mother addresses her daughter’s questions about how things work. For instance, an inquiry into where mommy keeps the money inspires the daughter to be a chief financial accountant. Sath’s spirited text consistently reinforces the message that young girls can not only have male-dominated positions but hold leadership roles in these occupations. For example, chief of police, head veterinarian, lead engineer, and more. Matsuoka’s illustrations offer warm tones, lines, and texture to deliver realistic characters showcasing ethnic characteristics in an empowering manner. As a multiracial reader, I have struggled to find children’s book with accurate representations of ethnic hair and this book offers this in a natural way. It is absolutely essential for readers to not only see themselves in children’s books but to also see reflections of what they can do—Sath was able to offer both vital experiences in Just Like You! I would encourage readers to share this book with children of all genders and ethnicities to further tackle traditional gender roles and help instill the message that little girls can grow up to not only hold male-dominated positions, but they can thrive and lead in these fields.
