A Morning with Grandpa by Sylvia Liu and illustrated by Christina Forshay is a beautiful homage to the loving bond between grandparent and grandchild. Liu’s descriptive and humorously playful text was complimented by the comforting tones and shapes of Forshay’s art work. Personally, I was most touched by the sincere care the granddaughter expressed towards her grandfather as she encourages him to try out the yoga poses despite his creaky bones. Touching interactions such as this are not only thoughtful of the author but also portrays relatable characters for readers to connect with. I was also impressed to see Liu included information on tai chi and yoga, as well as other sources at the end of the book—these are features that are typically limited to non-fiction books, so it was a happy surprise! It is not a surprise to me that A Morning with Grandpa won the “New Voices Award” from Lee & Low Books as Liu eloquently presents a culturally diverse perspective by creating real characters sharing an intergenerational bond. This picture book is sure to be loved by readers of all ages but I especially recommend it for grandparents and grandchildren to read together!
*I received this book for review from Sylvia Liu and publisher, Lee & Low Books as part of Multicultural Children’s Book Day! Thank you!
